Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

  Duties and Responsibilities:Perform surgery and related procedures on the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions to treat diseases, injuries, or defects. May diagnose problems of the oral and maxilloacial regions. May perform surgery to improve function or appearance. 
  Salary:Oral and maxillofacial surgeons make an excellent living. Their average annual salary was $232,870 in 2016, which is on the upper end of all health care salaries. Orthodontists made a comparable average salary of $228,780 in 2016. Surgeons, however, made more, bringing in an average of $252,910.
  Education:The surgical residencies for oral and maxillofacial surgeons are usually four to six years. After completion of the residencysurgeons can take a written and oral exam to become board certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The second path is to earn dual degrees as both a dentist and medical doctor.
